-     Statistics Editor at the Financial Times (1999-2010)
-     Investment banking research, at HSBC, Warburg and Nikko (1987-99)
-     Civil servant, in Treasury, Central Statistical Office and EU in Brussels (1981-87)

-     The executive of Straight Statistics, which exposed the misuse of data
-     Technical advisor to the OECD's 'Measuring the progress of societies' project until 2012
-     Between 2006 and 2011 he was on the executive of the Statistics User Forum
-     Council member of the Royal Statistical Society (1998-2003) and the Society of Business Economists (now renamed SPE)
-     In the 2009 team that produced theBellagioSTAMP guiding principles used to measure and assess progress towards sustainability
